Here is a quaint little story about how Ham Lake got its name: The earliest settlers Scottish Yankees named the area “Glen Cary ,” which is Scottish for “beautiful valley.” Unfortunately, all of their homes burned up in a fire in 1857 and they all left. They were replaced by Scandinavians who could not pronounce “Glen Cary.” Folklore has it that they re-named the area “Ham Lake,” because of a principal lake shaped like a ham. Farming intensified after 1895 with a system of drainage. Most of the development in Ham Lake has occurred in recent years. In fact, Ham Lake did not even have its own post office until 1984. It did have a phone service as early as 1903, which was available for a fee of $6.00 per year. FDR’s rural electrification program brought power to the area in the late 1930’s. Residential and commercial development was limited, largely because of poor roads.

Today, Ham Lake commerce is also supported by a robust infrastructure which includes MN-65, CO-116, CO-18, and easy access to I-35, I-694, and US 10. Ham Lake has grown into a north metro suburb of about 15,000 people. A commute to the Twin Cities metro is only about 20 minutes. The City of Ham Lake benefits from a number of local employers, including Soderquist’s Market, Crosstown Masonry, and Yale Materials Handling-Minnesota, Inc.
