Whenever we hear the words “Coon Rapids,” we think of fun. Lots of fun! Fun in the outdoors!

To most residents of the Twin Cities, the Bunker Beach Water Park is synonymous with Coon Rapids. Bunker Beach Water Park features the largest wave pool in Minnesota. It also offers a plunge pool, a zero-entry water pool, and an assortment of water slides that is second-to-none. For the toddlers, the facility offers a huge sand-play area. There are also volleyball courts, a picnic area, and concessions.

Bunker Hills Regional Park contains 1600 beautiful acres of outdoor recreation. Check out the horseback riding, archery, inline skating, and camping opportunities that this park provides. In the winter, miles of trails means plenty of fun on cross-country skis. An annual permit is only $25.00, and we think you will agree that this is a heckuva deal.

The City of Coon Rapids is dead-serious about having fun. It operates an impeccably maintained golf course at Bunker Hills. According to Golf Digest, this is one of the top 25 golf courses in the nation. it has hosted a USGA National Public Links Championship, PGA Senior Tours, and a Minnesota PGA Championship, to name just a few. The course has 27 holes, and all of them are challenging because all of them require different shots.

Coon Rapids MN is a large northern Minneapolis suburb with a population of about 63,480. Most of it lies within Anoka County, but a part of the western end overlaps into Hennepin County. (Please change /add the following)

Although Coon Rapids, as a separate municipality has existed only since 1952 when it was incorporated as a village form the township of Anoka, its history as a community goes back more than a hundred years. Anoka Township was organized June 30, 1857 when Anoka County was organized. The Federal Government surveyed the area in 1847, it found a well traveled road running through Anoka County. The road was laid out in 1835 for military use and may be the oldest road in this part of the country. In 1843, trade was established from St. Paul to Pembina (now North Dakota) in the Red River Valley, the road then became part of the famous Red River Ox Cart Trail. The trail closely followed the present East River Road/Coon Rapids Boulevard alignment.

The name “Coon Rapids” refers to the raccoons that inhabited a turbulent portion of the Mississippi river called “Coon Creek Rapids.”
