The city of Anoka is a community with a sense of history. The name “Anoka” is probably derived from the Dakota word A-NO-KA-TAN-HAN, which means “from both sides,” referring to the location along the Rum River. The city was settled by Europeans, and was incorporated in 1870.
The city boasts a strong contribution to the Grand Army of the Republic. At the time of the attack on Fort Sumter, Minnesota Governor Alexander Ramsey was in Washington. He quickly offered a regiment to support the Union cause. Ramsey sent a message to St. Paul, and a note was relayed to the Anoka courthouse, where six men immediately volunteered. Among them, an ill-fated Aaron Greenwald was and the first to sign up. Greenwald died while serving the 1st Minnesota regiment during its famous, heroic charge at Gettysberg.
The City of Anoka is probably better known for being the “Halloween Capitol of the World.” Anoka was the first city to host a Halloween parade in 1920. Later, the city petitioned the U.S. Congress to officially grant it the title “Halloween Capital of the World.” It doesn’t seem like a good use of the Federal Government’s time and taxpayer money, but the Congress granted Anoka its request. The town still celebrates every Halloween with several parades.
Anoka is situated along the confluence of the Rum and Mississippi Rivers, making it an ideal trade center. Today, all of that waterfront provides plenty of recreational activities for its 18,000 residents. An historic park at the juncture of these rivers provides a wonderful trail system that connects the business district, and other parks. Anoka maintains a large number of parks, ballfields, tennis courts, an outdoor aquatic center, and an indoor pool.
Anoka has always been “ahead of the curve” in providing essential city services. Its own electrical utility was establishd in 1909. Anoka also runs two municipal liquor stores, a golf course, and two cemeteries, but not necessarily in that order of priority.
At the confluence of these rivers, the community provides a historic park that connects a trail system throughout the City to active areas in the central business district, county fairgrounds, Anoka Ice Arena and golf course. There are thirty other parks and playgrounds, with four major park complexes which include a lit and supervised sliding hill, 31 ballfields, 16 tennis courts, 12 municipal buildings, an indoor pool, a new outdoor aquatic center and senior citizen activity center.
If you are looking for a town that is within a short drive of the metro, has a thriving business sector, and still has a sense of community, you should explore the Anoka MN real estate market. Homes are very affordable here. According to the Northstar Regional MLS statisitcs,* there are 97 single family homes for sale with an average offering price of only $190,118! The average year-built of these homes is 1956. Because Anoka is an older, well-developed community, new single family home construction opportunities are a little difficult to find. Surprisingly, the average list price of the 30 townhomes and condos in at a very close $187,887. There are a handful of high rise condos for sale that are only a few years old.
Regardless of your tastes, needs, or budget, the Anoka MN real estate market has something for you. Neighborhoods show pride of ownership, and its ideal location makes this a good place to invest in property.
