Legend has it that the City of Andover was given its name when a steam locomotive derailed and rolled over and over and over. This is not very plausible when you consider that there are several cities in the U.S. named Andover. This is a cute story but the truth is that most Scand avian immigrants are 2nd Generation from New England and the first settlers here named the city after Andover, Maine. Actually, the train station serving the area was first given the name Andover Village. Andover became a city in 1974.
If you visit Andover today, you won’t see any trains falling in the river. However, you will find an exciting community of 31,000 citizens who are resolute about maintaining the natural beauty of the area while promoting viable commerce. This vigilance is manifested by 400 acres of well-kept parks and other recreational areas. The community is also home to a new development called “Andover Station North.” This is a multi-faceted project that is planned to acomodate retail business, a residential neighborhood, light industry, and several ballfields.
With plenty of room to grow, Andover sees about 250 new home starts per year. The large number of brand new Andover homes for sale is a reflection of the young age of this city. There are plenty of affordable, brand new split entries available in the 200’s, including some by quality builders like JM Semler, Accent Homes, and Scott Olmstead. If you tour some of these homes, you will be surprised to see that wrought-iron spindles are back in vogue! Fortunately, they are styled better than the ones we saw in the 60’s and 70’s. Earth-tone colors are also back, but they are much richer than their older versions.
If you jump up to the 300-500K price range, you will have a nice selection of custom-built two story homes loaded up with every luxury amenity. All told, there are about two dozen new single family homes for sale in Andover. According to the Northstar Regional MLS statistics,* there are 287 single family homes for sale on the Andover MLS, with an average list price of $320,883, and an average year-built of 1994.
If you are looking for a young, exciting community with natural beauty and close proximity to the big-city excitement of the Twin Cities, you won’t go wrong buying real estate in Andover.
